Almost £720,000 is to be spent improving the roads in Boyd Valley this year, thanks to a campaign by local Conservative councillors Ben Stokes and Steve Reade.
Key rural roads such as Ashwicke Road, Hall Lane, Shortwood Road and Parkers Avenue will be resurfaced to ensure local residents are able to get around the ward more easily.
As part of the package of improvements, £160,000 will be spent resurfacing parts of Ashwicke Road, £122,000 will go towards improving Hall Lane from Freezing Hill Lane, and £93,000 will be spent resurfacing a 2,257 metre stretch of Tolldown Road from the A46 to Marshfield Road.
South Gloucestershire Council has also committed £74,000 to resurface Maple Walk in Pucklechurch, £30,000 to improve Parkers Avenue in Wick and £56,000 for Shortwood Road in Pucklechurch.
A 1,300m stretch that encompasses Shortwood Hill, Main Road and Pomphrey Hill will also be resurfaced, along with Bath Road on the approach towards Freezing Hill Lane.
Local councillors Steve and Ben are also pushing South Glos Council to ensure the roadside gullies and drainage systems are properly maintained so new road surfaces don’t suffer from water damage.
Cllr Steve Reade, Conservative ward member for Boyd Valley and a member of South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet, said: “This is brilliant news for residents in Boyd Valley as the rural roads have been badly affected by the cold weather we had over the winter months.
“This significant package of improvements demonstrates what can be achieved by the Conservatives at a local level, and it shows our continued commitment to the area.”
This year, a 30mph speed limit will also be introduced on Bath Road, Wick, in order to better improve pedestrian safety.
Ensuring the road network is kept in top condition is a key priority for the local Conservatives, who have spent more than £22m on road repairs across South Glos since 2019.
Cllr Ben Stokes, Conservative ward member for Boyd Valley and Deputy Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Once these improvement works have been completed, residents will notice a big difference to the local road network and will find it much easier to get around.
"I’m pleased that so much positive work will be going on in Boyd Valley this year and would like to thank the Council’s Highways team for responding to mine and Steve’s calls for action.”
Dates and times for when the resurfacing schemes will take place are currently being drawn up and Conservative councillors will ensure local residents receive timely updates.
