South Gloucestershire Council has agreed to join the West of England Devolution Deal, after Bath and North East Somerset and Bristol City Councils agreed the same earlier in the day.
The deal, one of the best in the country, offers more than £1000 per head of population to the West of England and precipitates the creation of a new Mayoral Combined Authority for the West of England, which will be led by a committee comprising the Mayor of Bristol, the Leaders of South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset, and chaired by a new elected Mayor for the West of England.
Speaking of the deal Cllr Matthew Riddle, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council said: “We are looking forward to working with our devolution partners to bring powers and money closer to the people. The West of England is the beating heart of the UK’s economy, which pays more in taxes than it takes in government spending, and this deal will help unleash hidden potential, ensuring we have jobs, houses and transport infrastructure not just for today, but for future generations.”
